The Humidors, Sun Hop Fat at Ivy Room
7/22 - THE HUMIDORS // SUN HOP FAT at Ivy Room The Humidors: "Everything The Humidors play is given a heavy contemporary spin that splinters dance floors and leaves audiences in a sweaty daze. The band is a well-oiled unit with a polyrhythmic approach that balances short, sharp solos with an overwhelming collective approach." - J. Poet, SF Weekly Hailing from the Bay Area, The Humidors have been churning out their own unique brand of party music for half a decade. Combining elements of hard-hitting funk, greasy soul, vintage R&B, soul jazz and more you can be sure that this eight-piece unit is committed to the groove in all its shapes and forms. With the recent addition of Andre Cruz's soulful and heartfelt lead vocals, The Humidors are taking their music to the next level and ready to spread the Gospel of Funk to dance floors everywhere. Having shared the stage with acts such as Dumpstaphunk, The New Mastersounds, The Meters' Leo Nocentelli, Shuggie Otis, and the late, great Bernie Worrell, The Humidors are in their element on stage. Bursts and washes of B3, punchy horns, chugging percussion, thumping bass, and burning guitar leads all interweave in an infectious polyrhythmic stew. This band of troubadours has developed a sound that pulls from a melting pot of old-school and modern influences, yet is always rooted in a commitment to ego-less playing that embraces the ensemble approach to funk. The Humidors are currently working on their sophomore LP. Watch for it dropping early 2017. The Humidors are Justin Abee (percussion), Ben Corrie (keyboards/organ), Andre Cruz (lead vocals), Mike Mulqueen (guitar/vocals), Eric Podolsky (bass/vocals), and Adam Willis (drums). Sun Hop Fat: For years Sun Hop Fat has been at the forefront of introducing the unique sounds of Ethiopian Jazz to the masses. The music blends the rhythms of traditional American funk (James Brown, Parliament) and jazz (Yusef Lateef, Miles Davis) with harmonies and melodies from East Africa. The result is an up-tempo groove machine that borrows harmonies from the Middle East. The music focuses primarily on arrangements from the "golden era" of Ethiopian Jazz but includes original compositions as well. This all-star band includes standout musicians from other popular San Francisco Bay Area groups. Sun Hop Fat has developed a solid following throughout Northern California by playing a number of clubs and festivals. The ability of the band to captivate sit down jazz crowds as well as steal the spotlight in prime festival slots, encouraging crowds to get up and dance, makes the group flexible in its appeal and garners support from diverse audiences.
