The Disagreeable Object through April 29, Nightwalks opens April 8

April 22, 2017
11:00 am

April 1 - 29, Wednesday through Saturday, 11am, 2pm and 4pm Now on view in the main House, The Disagreeable Object. (through April 29) The exhibition, The Disagreeable Object, takes its title from Alberto Giacometti's surrealist sculpture, The Disagreeable Object, 1931. A defying sculptural attempt against artistic categorization, poised between movement and rest, between art and non-art, The Disagreeable Object is a rebellious and humorously unappealing object. Its vulgar shape is embodied in a form that may be disturbingly incomprehensible, but nevertheless sculpturally perfect. "The 500 Capp Street exhibition, The Disagreeable Object," notes co-curator Diego Villalobos, "hinges on alternative definitions of "good taste," situating sculpture in the realm of attitude, beyond its material constraints." In The Garage, opening April 8, Nightwalks, Isabel Nuno de Buen. Nuno de Buen creates sculptural installations resembling architectural models, that are largely horizontal, expansive, and fragmentary. These three-dimensional constructions-which the artist refers to as constellations-stem from a complex layering process. For Nightwalks, Nuno de Buen begins by drawing with chalk directly onto the garage floor, creating a fragmented pattern based on her evening explorations around the streets of Hannover, Germany, in search of cardboard materials. The cardboard is cut, layered and sanded resulting in large modular columns. Visit the David Ireland House at 500 Capp Street and experience a work of art that embodies Ireland's art + life ethos and post minimal aesthetics. The House is the late Bay Area conceptual artist's historic house and most industrious and seminal work, often considered the masterpiece of his career. The House features 3-4 exhibitions per year that highlight a rotating selection of work. Presented by 500 Capp Street, the David Ireland House
