The Art of the Piano Trio
The Lee Trio, violinist Lisa Lee, cellist Angela Lee and pianist Melinda Lee Masur, will perform two chamber works from the piano trio repertoire: Beethoven Trio No. 5 in D Major, Op. 70, No. 1 "Ghost" Trio and Dvor?k Trio No. 4 in E Minor, Op. 90 "Dumky". In both, the composers break away from tradition, creating new sound worlds and highlighting the magnitude of the human spirit.
Since their 2002 debut, the Lee Trio has given recitals and masterclasses, recorded for Hong Kong's classical broadcast radio, and appeared on the televised program, Music of Friends. They have commissioned and premiered pieces by Nathaniel Stookey, Laurence Rosenthal, Julian Yu, Jane Antonia Cornish and others. They were the first Ensemble-in-Residence of the Chelsea Music Festival in New York City.
Educating the next generation of musicians is key to the Trio's mission. They perform outreach and concerts in areas where the arts have little or no exposure and were the first classical ensemble to perform for students at a school in Las Vegas' most at-risk neighborhood. In 2011, they taught music and worked with underserved youth in Ukraine.
Each Trio member has received the California State Assembly Recognition for Exemplary Service to the Community. They work with new and established musicians and chamber ensembles and have served on the faculty of institutions such as Boston University and the San Francisco-based Young Chamber Musicians.
In 2010, the Trio performed for German Chancellor Angela Merkel and in 2014, for former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the reunification of Germany. The members of The Lee Trio are graduates of The Curtis Institute, The Juilliard School, Yale and Harvard, the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the Hochschule fur Musik und Theater Hannover.
Lisa Lee plays on a 1872 Jean Baptiste Vuillaume; Angela Lee performs on a 1762 Nicolo Gagliano cello from Naples; Melinda Lee Masur is a Steinway Artist.
