Strings Attached Schubert: Quartettsatz D. 703 Bach: Violin Concerto in E Major Robin Sharp, violinist Bartók: Divertimento for Strings Schubert left numerous works unfinished, including the Quartettsatz, which was later arranged for string orchestra. The melodies are a great example of Schubert’s ability to produce tunes of unimaginable beauty, and yet are so seemingly simple. J.S. Bach’s effervescent Violin Concerto in E Major continues our exploration of the expressive possibilities of the stringed instruments. This concerto showcases the violinist’s sense of emotion, poetry, fantasy, wit, and technical command— truly a creation of purest Bachian splendor! Then follows Béla Bartók’s great Divertimento for Strings, music in which the folk melodies and rhythms of Bartók’s native Hungary are transformed through his genius into a dramatic and beautiful essay for stringed instruments.
