Storefront Hitchcock Screening Room Sun, Dec 17, 4PM See more at Jonathan Demme's rarely screened opus captures singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock in an intimate and engaging performance in a derelict New York shopfront. Hitchcock's dark, off-kilter wit is very much in evidence, and the songs are boosted by Demme's minimal but breathtaking cinematic flourishes. A must-see for Hitchcock fans; if you're not one, this upbeat and endlessly charming film will make you one. Happy holidays. (1998, 77 minutes, 35mm) Part of: Demme Duo Dec 14--Dec 17 Screening Room We end 2017 with a fond remembrance of filmmaker Jonathan Demme through two of his great works, Philadelphia (1993) and Storefront Hitchcock (1998). Demme, who passed away in April 2017, began his career, like many of his contemporaries, under the guidance of legendary low-budget producer Roger Corman before becoming one of Hollywood's greatest humanists. The trademarks of Demme's style--a generous engagement with the humanity of his characters, extensive use of penetrating close-ups, and an innate understanding of music's cinematic qualities--are all captured in this short but powerful series.
