IPODERAC creates a strong sense of brotherhood and is sustained through the sale of artisanal goat cheese. "Visitor's Day" is an observational documentary that follows Juan Carlos through a transformative year of his life, as he finds the strength to return to Mexico City to overcome his sense of abandonment and forgive his father. Along the way, other boys overcome their own obstacles with the support of the extraordinary staff at IPODERAC. Woodpeckers , 4:30pm Julian finds love and a reason for living in the last place imaginable: the Dominican Republic's Najayo Prison. He 'meets' Yanelly from across the prison yard and manages to learn a kind of sign language to communicate with her and avoiding the prison guards. Using real prison locations and non-actors throughout, WOODPECKERS is based on real events. Premiered at Sundance. One Last Afternoon, 7pm Laura was a young woman from Lima's upper class who met Ramon, an idealistic university student, in Cusco. Today they meet again to sign their divorce papers. Nothing, not even the past, will be safe this day. Laura era una joven limena de clase alta que conocio en Cusco a Ramon, un universitario idealista. Little White Lie, 8:30pm Due to the simple nature of a small country town, a failed journalist is forced to fabricate news to avoid losing his job. After becoming the most popular journalist and respected man in town, he will have to decide between lying to continue his fame or tell the truth and lose everything. 09/24/2017 Voices Beyond the Wall, 2pm Founded twenty-five years ago in San Pedro Sula, a Central American city infamous for its poverty and violence, Our Little Roses is the only girls' orphanage in Honduras. Seventy girls, aged one to eighteen, have found refuge there from broken and destitute homes, murderous streets, and the neighboring Bordo, the worst slum in the Americas. Inside twenty-foot-high concrete walls topped with barbed wire, the girls receive medical attention, food, shelter, and the nurturing care of a vibrant and entirely female collective of other "desechables" (a slang word for orphans, also used for "disposable containers"). "Voices Beyond the Wall: Twelve Love Poems from the Murder Capital of the World" explores the question: how do those subjected to profoundest trauma and rejection begin to heal themselves and change the course of their lives? La Soledad, 4:30pm Handyman Jose lives with his family in La Soledad, a ramshackle villa located in what was once among Caracas' most affluent neighborhoods. After learning that the villa's owners are planning to sell the estate, Jose seeks any solution that might keep his six-year-old daughter from growing up in Caracas' crime-sodden slums. Might that fabled treasure supposedly hidden in La Soledad's walls offer Jose's family a chance at a better life? "La Soledad" (d. Jorge Thielen Armand), from Venezuela, is an arresting blend of documentary and narrative feature, in which the actual participants in a real-life drama become players in the drama. The story of a family forced to uproot from their home shows rigorous commitment for the metaphysics of place and a compositional instinct that never quits." -Mick LaSalle, SFGate Translucid, 6:30pm Ruben has been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. He has three months to live or a year-and-a-half with treatment. Ruben has decided to end his life with dignity, without loose ends. 09/25/2017 Raising Zoey , 7pm Thirteen-old trans activist Zoey Luna wants nothing more than to go to school, receive an education, and have fun with her friends in Downey, CA. Even in the face of bullying and endless teasing from school officials and students, Zoey continues to live her life and tells her story in the hopes of helping others persevere in living their authentic lives. 09/26/2017 The Fates, 7pm An American girl travels to Brazil and falls in love with a drug dealer from the favelas, in the captivating city of Rio de Janeiro. 09/27/2017 Last Days in Havana, 7pm Miguel and Diego are friends sharing an apartment in Central Havana.
