PedalCulture: The Guitar Effects Pedal as Cultural Artifact

Oct. 31-Nov.17, 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Opening Reception, Thurs., Nov. 2, 4:00-7:00 PM

Presented by DESIGNSPACE at San Francisco State University, and exploring the theme of “The Culture of Guitar Effects Pedals | Guitar Effects Pedals in the Culture,” this exhibition demonstrates how manufactured products both affect and reflect the culture at large.

On display will be 60 effects pedals supported by large-scale photographic displays, music samples, an interactive effects installation and abundant interpretive material to make this a truly educational experience for musicians and non-musicians alike. “PedalCulture” presents a unique opportunity for visitors to view rare, unusual and decidedly offbeat effects pedals owing to the participation of some of the most notable guitar effects designers and manufacturers the world over.

Exhibition Highlights:

• Opening reception, Thursday, November 2, from 4:00-7:00 PM: Panel discussion and musical performance is open to all gallery visitors. Guitar effects demonstration, in-depth discussion with Guitar Player magazine editor Mike Molenda, and live musical performance by guitarist Jimmy Leslie.

• Interactive installation allows visitors to channel their inner rocker by experimenting with different guitar effects and internal settings of an effects pedal.

• Display of 60 effects pedals representing builders from nine different countries and showcasing many artisanal, limited production and one-of-a-kind pedal designs.
