Pasados del Presidio
The Mexican Museum is delighted to collaborate with the Presidio Trust for Pasados del Presidio, a free event where different organizations have educational activities that highlight and celebrate the Spanish and native peoples of the past. Stop by our table where your little ones can create their very own decorative talavera tiles and talavera plates! Talavera is a type of Maiolica pottery distinguished by a base white glaze. Talavera has Spanish origins dating back to the 15th and 16th century in the town of Talavera De La Reina, Spain, where it was influenced by many of the international populating cultures. It was inherited by the people of Puebla, Mexico during the construction of the Church of Santo Domingo, which began in 1571. Though talavera is now hand-formed from the rich black and white volcanic soils in and around Puebla, Mexico, the style will always represent a melting pot of cultures--Arabic, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, and of course, Mexican.
