Open House at Goethe-Institut San Francisco - 50th Anniversary celebration

August 26, 2017
11:00 am
Goethe Institut San Francisco

For 50 years, Goethe-Institut San Francisco has been celebrating German culture and language by organizing events in and around the Bay Area, and on Saturday, August 26, the organization will commemorate the 50 year anniversary of being in San Francisco. An entire day filled with music, poetry slams, literature, short language courses, workshops for kids and adults and traditional fresh snacks with exclusive beer tastings of German specialty beers will be a part of the celebration. The day begins at 11AM with two hands-on arts workshops featuring local artists and experienced teachers including Susanna Jackson. Children and teenagers are encouraged to come and join in on the fun until 1PM. The art workshop for adults also starts at 11AM. Starting at Noon, the German International School of Silicon Valley (GISSV) senior orchestra will perform a musical cross-section of classical composers. Renowned poetry slammer Julia Engelmann from Germany and Mighty Mike from the US will perform, while the “poetry room” will offer lyrical refuge and take-away poems to literary buffs. On the second floor, skilled and seasoned teachers will provide a free glimpse into the high-quality and internationally renowned language classes. Visitors can register for the 30-minute trail courses through the Goethe-Institut website. The Goethe-Institut’s very own beer garden featured by the Bay Area German Beer Cellar opens at 1PM and allows visitors to try German beers. The first 20 beers are free (1 per person)! Exclusive specialty-beer tastings are available through registration via the Goethe-Institut website. Esther’s Bakery will provide hungry visitors and language-learners with fresh, traditional German treats ranging from Pretzels to Berliners. At 2PM, Charlotte, owner of the beloved children’s bookstore Charlie’s Corner, will mesmerize bookworms of all ages with a reading from an award winning book. At the end of the day, the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars ensemble will present a timeless, innovative, and entertaining musical performance and invites people to present their best dance moves or simply sit back, relax and enjoy the musical ride. The raffle offers the chance to win various different prizes. The first prize includes a two-week language course in Germany, as well as flight and accommodation! The second prize is a full German course at the Goethe-Institut San Francisco. A festival pass for the Berlin & Beyond Film Festival 2018 is the third prize. Participants can also win a hand-signed book by Cornelia Funke and other Goethe goodies.
