My Soul Is a Witness: Fundraiser and Book Release for Joyce Lee
Oakland writer, poet, and storytelling powerhouse Joyce Lee is releasing her first book of collected writings entitled, "My Soul Is A Witness." After the sudden loss of her husband, David, this summer, Joyce has decided to tour throughout Europe promoting her first book, and to continue journeying (while creating) abroad.
So, a few of the BEST Bay Area's storytellers have decided to come together and create a benefit show to send Joyce on her travels!
Joyce is beloved by the storytelling, poetry and Oakland community, and anyone who has heard her on stage knows: she's powerful, talented, and no one can touch the real thing. We welcome YOU to join in supporting Joyce on this journey by enjoying an evening of storytelling. Please spread the word!
All storytellers from this show will be donating the proceeds directly to Joyce. Get your tickets or make your donation today to support this amazing writer, womyn, and friend.
Cohosted by Tourettes Without Regret's Jamie DeWolf, this evening features:
Baruch Porras-Hernandez is a Pushcart Prize nominated writer, performer and standup comedian, named one of the 13 Top Bay Area Writers to Watch in 2016 by 7×7 Magazine in San Francisco.
Gina Gold is an African American, Jewish humorist, filmmaker and stage artist. She grew up in a New York neighborhood thinking “oy vey” was something all black people said.
Jamie DeWolf is a writer, performer, film director, teaching artist, show producer and circus ringmaster from Oakland, CA.
Jason Bayani is a graduate of Saint Mary’s MFA program in Creative Writing. He is a Kundiman fellow and a veteran of the National Poetry Slam scene whose work has been published in Fourteen Hills, Muzzle Magazine, Mascara Review, the National Poetry Slam anthology, Rattapallax, Write Bloody’s classroom anthology–– Learn Then Burn, and other publications.
Mighty Mike McGee is a storyteller, comedian, poetry champion. For just a funny-poet from San José, California, he has seen a lot of the world. In the arena of poetry competition, he is the first and (so far) only person ever to win the Grand Championship at both the National Poetry Slam (2003) and the Individual World Poetry Slam (2006).
Of course, the evening would not be complete without Joyce Lee!
