Monterey Bay Birding Festival

September 23, 2017
6:30 am
Watsonville Civic Plaza

The Monterey Bay Birding Festival Association is pleased to announce the festival date and events for the thirteenth annual festival. This year's festival takes place on Saturday, September 23rd, 2017. Strategically hosted during fall migration, the festival provides participants with the opportunity to see as many as 250 bird species that frequent Monterey Bay and its surrounds. Serious birding enthusiasts can add to their lists California specialty life-list birds such as the California Thrasher, California Towhee, Bell's Sparrow, Oak Titmouse, Nuttall's Woodpecker, Elegant Tern, and the endangered California Condor. Local birders will have unusual access to private lands on some trips, and new birders will find supportive leaders and trips to boost skills quickly. This year's keynote speaker is the renowned Ornithologist, Peter Pyle, who will present "Ecology and Conservation of the Gulf of the Farallones." Peter will also host an educational workshop on "Adventures in Molt." Film Director, Maya Khosla, will screen her beautiful documentary film: "Searching for the Goldspot: The Wild after Wildfire." To round out activities, the City of Watsonville Nature Center will host "Family Days," offering bi-lingual family fun, bird walks and snacks for kids of all ages. The Elkhorn Slough Reserve will offer a birding field trip along with other educational activities and snacks during their Open House, kayaking in Elkhorn Slough is available through Kayak Connections, and pelagic boating trips will be offered by Shearwater Journeys. So don't miss this opportunity to view the birds and other wildlife in one of the most beautiful places on the planet during fall migration, the Monterey Bay on the California Central Coast.
