November 27- December 31 artist’s reception December 9, 5-8pm.

Mendocino, California- Rebecca Johnson, a painter and sculptor presents a new body of work Light as Blue inspired by Northern California, a place of dense forest, coastal savannah and meandering rivers flowing into the vast Pacific Ocean.

Rebecca Johnson’s show is at the Mendocino Art Center (MAC) it is the western most art center in the United States, excepting Alaska and Hawaii. MAC it is situated 150 miles north of San Francisco overlooking a rugged expanse of the Pacific Ocean in the historic coastal village of Mendocino. Because of its unique setting and 1960 beat cultural history MAC is a destination for anyone visiting Northern California. Johnson’s poetic evocative work links this rural art center to the broader world of contemporary art. Second Saturday, December 9, is the reception and art evening at galleries in Mendocino.

Walk into Johnson’s installation of carved stone and light filled paintings. Sit on a hand hewn granite bench experience a feeling of quiet contemplation. Her paintings range from saturated blue to subtle whites, they beckon the viewer to a space beyond the canvases surface.  Her stone carvings are of volcanic basalt. Johnson deftly carves the solid stone into fluid forms of dripping water or standing pool. Her work is about a place, a remote rural place, a place to unplug and recharge in a new light.

Rebecca Johnson moved to California from Philadelphia in 1997. Her studio is in Philo in Anderson Valley, CA. She holds an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA and a BFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University.
