Ken Emerson and Jim Kimo West- Slackers in Paradise
This show is an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary Hawaiian slack key, acoustic steel guitar, ukulele and vocals with blues, jazz and ragtime influences. We use a number of instruments such as a 1928 National resonator guitar and a 1920's Martin ukulele. We often feature traditional hula when available and can present workshops on slack key and steel guitar techniques. "Slackers In Paradise" was nominated for a 2017 Na Hoku Hanohano award ( the Hawaiian "Grammy" ) and has been entered into the 2018 Grammy Awards, Regional Roots category. Ken Emerson has two Grammy's and I have been part of 4 Grammy-winning records as well as Billboard #1 Album as long-time guitarist for "Weird Al" Yankovic. Our last CD debuted at #1, won a Grammy and we played over 200 shows in 2015 and 2016, including the Hollywood Bowl and Radio City Music Hall. Recent venues include George Kahumoku Jr.'s "Masters of Slack Key" show on Maui, The Blue Note in Napa, Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, Yoshi's in Oakland, Vibrato Jazz Grill in Beverly Hills, Hawaii's Slack key Festivals and the Southern California Slack Key Festival.
