Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse

October 28, 2017
6:00 pm
Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive

As part of our Marlon Brando: The Fugitive Kind film series we are screening Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse: This award-winning documentary uses behind-the-scenes footage filmed by Eleanor Coppola during the 1976-77 location shoot of Apocalypse Now in the Philippines. In 1990, Coppola turned her material over to filmmakers George Hickenlooper and Fax Bahr, who shot new interviews with the original cast and crew and brought together this fascinating account, narrated by Eleanor Coppola, of the challenges faced by Francis Ford Coppola on this epic project that more often than not seemed insurmountable. "The result is fascinating, harrowing film history. We feel for once we are witnessing the true story of how a movie got made" (Roger Ebert).
