Celtic Sands Concert with Lunch

March 21, 2017
12:00 pm
Albert and Janet Schultz Cultural Arts Hall

"Celtic Sands is a dazzle of poetry and fun," says Jean Bartlett of the Pacifica Tribune. The group combines the music of Ireland, Scotland, Great Britain and US folk tradition with gypsy, modern rock, improvisation and storytelling to combine the traditions of the past with the present. With multiple CDs under their belt, Celtic Sands excites audiences with a wide array of instrumentation and stylistic interpretations of Celtic music, creating a contemporary sound and energy that keep listeners engaged. Lara Garner, the founding member of Celtic Sands, is both a folk and classical musician. She plays Celtic harp, tin whistle, Irish flute, recorder and bodhran. A classically trained pianist, Lara has played the major piano chamber music repertoire and is the founding member of the Amethyst Trio, Trio Con Spirito and Klezmerama. She writes her own music and taught herself to play the harp after dreaming of herself playing it. Originally from Ukraine, Alina Polonskaya is an accomplished classical violinist. Her passion for fiddling has led her to pursue different genres of folk music, including the folk/rock/traditional Irish mix of Celtic Sands. She brings a full and luscious tone to the sound of the group, adding intricate improvisation and beautiful harmonies. Local fiddle legend and multi-instrumentalist Michael Mullen is known for his whirlwind technical feats and intricate rock improvs. He adds unmatched vibrancy and energy to traditional Celtic music. Michael sings and is also a master of octave mandolin, guitar and viola. Having played with the band Tempest off and on for the past 20 years, he is also seen regularly at the Scottish games and festivals in his Trio for One show. Pamela Conley is a renowned classical opera singer, as well as a guitarist and banjo player. She brings superb musicianship to the group and an incredible love for everything Celtic and Irish. A delicious hot buffet lunch is included. Presented by The Oshman Family JCC
