The Supreme Court: What's Next? An Insider's View

Presented by the San Francisco Chronicle

Jeffrey Rosen / National Constitution Center / George Washington University

Few at the Founding could have ever imagined the Supreme Court becoming one of the most powerful policymaking institutions in the United States. Yet today, the Court has the power to sidestep public opinion, upend federal legislation, constrain state governance and question presidential decisions. During this fascinating, fast-paced discussion, Professor Rosen will look at some of the most pressing issues before the court today - free speech, immigration, voting rights and gerrymandering, religious freedom and privacy.

Of course, he'll discuss the refusal of Republican senators to question Obama nominee Merrick Garland, the recent nomination and confirmation of Neil Gorsuch, and the most likely direction the court will follow under the new administration. By the end of the evening Professor Rosen will have demonstrated how it is far more than legal scholarship and judicial philosophy that has shaped the court - it is the interactions and personalities of the individual members that have created the institution that we know today.
