2nd Summer Show!, Thurs JULY 20. Craig Jessup/This Funny World
NEW SONGS IN EVERY SHOW! The San Francisco Chronicle wrote in 2016: A veteran of cabaret stages for more than 25 years, Craig Jessup spans musical styles. He can be playful and twangy, or edgy and electric. His singing also has a narrative quality that betrays his musical theater background. Each lyric springs from a deep and distinct emotion; each bit of phrasing is carefully sculpted to communicate an idea with clarity and dynamism. In 1926, Lorenz Hart wrote: 'This funny world makes fun of the things that you strive for. This Funny world can laugh at the dreams you're alive for." More than 90 years later, it's still a funny world, so acclaimed singer Craig Jessup invites us to share in the glory of the greatest songwriters from the Great American Songbook - Rodgers and Hart, the Gershwins, Stephen Sondheim and more. Jessup returns to Society Cabaret in the Hotel Rex with This Funny World, a classy collection of tunes performed at 8pm on the third Thursday of June, July and August. With musical director/accompanist Ken Muir and bassist Daniel Fabricant, Jessup will explore some of our greatest musical standards and throw in some gems from across the pond by "The Master," Sir Noel Coward. Jessup sold out the run of his one-man showcase Craig Jessup Sings Noel Coward at the Mark Hopkins Hotel, an evening that was described by the Contra Costa Times as "sophisticated...wonderfully bright and intelligent (not to mention very funny)."
