2017 Left Coast Annual Juried Exhibition & 2016 LCA Awards Exhibition

May 20, 2017
1:00 pm

2017 Left Coast Annual Opens at Sanchez Art Center Sanchez Art Center is pleased to present the 2017 Left Coast Annual Juried Exhibition, April 21–May 21. Showing concurrently is the 2016 LCA Awards Exhibition, featuring Andrea Borsuk and Victoria May. An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 21, 7–9 pm, with live music by Blue on Green, featuring Rob Wullenjohn on guitar, Peggy Johnston on flute, and Bill Oaks on bass. Susan Sayre Batton, Interim Director of San Jose Museum of Art, served as juror for Left Coast Annual. Her task, no easy one, was to select 50 artworks from the 797 entries submitted by 288 artists, all from California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska. Juror Batton chose works in a variety of media, from photography and digital inkjet prints to mixed media and installations, with some large acrylic paintings adding strong color. Some of the largest 2D artworks measure up to 5 feet wide; the smallest is a diminutive 3” x 7.5”. The public is invited to hear Batton discuss her jurying process and talk with the artists about their work on Sunday, May 21, at 3:30 pm. Showing concurrently is the 2016 LCA Awards Exhibition, showcasing work by Andrea Borsuk and Victoria May, award recipients chosen by 2016 juror Lucía Sanromán, Director of Visual Arts at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. This year’s LCA winners coincidentally happen to be friends. Rather than divide the hallway of the exhibition space into two halves, the two artists decided each would take one side of the hallway gallery and create a dialogue between the installations on their two walls. At the north end of the gallery, Borsuk drapes strings of tiny figures, seeming to hang from the clouds, across the horizon of her 30-foot black-and-white landscape mural. Across from this dreamy landscape, May creates round wire pillows of air that extend out from the walls. In the south half, May hangs boxes of found textiles and other objects that are both hauntingly familiar and perplexing. On the opposite wall are Borsuk’s gestural acrylic landscape paintings that, on closer inspection, reveal tiny embedded worlds and figures. This is a truly wonderful back and forth exchange between friends who love to create poetry and synchronicity with the materials at hand. Come to the reception on April 21 prepared to make art of your own by participating in our Community Art Project, titled Pacifica Art. Your creations will be displayed at Sanchez Art Center during 2017. The public is also invited to Sanchez Art Center’s Open Studios on Mother’s Day, May 14, 11–5 pm. There will be a number of artist demonstrations to show how each artist works or to demonstrate a particular technique or medium. Sanchez Art Center is located at 1220 Linda Mar Boulevard in Pacifica, about a mile east of Highway 1. Following opening night, the galleries are open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 1–5 pm, and by appointment, through May 21. For more information: 650.355.1894;
